Modifier Keys

24 Sep

The key to maximizing your “computer” work-life is to comprehend, to retain and to implement a knowledge of modifier keys so that:

  • You can accomplish your work tasks in a fraction of the time
  • You can streamline repetitive tasks

There are 4 modifier keys that you should learn or know:

Alt – This modifier key (along with a second key) will help you to activate all your menus and even use the new Windows 7 ribbon. I remember it this way (A LT (looks like “a list”)

Control – This key is a power house key (using the control key with arrows or with the Home / End key) is like charging your keyboard with the energizer bunny. (BAAAM!)

Shift – is the anchor key (something that is held down with weight). By using this key you can highlight text.

Windows –  is used with the Operating System not necessarily with the applications.

Learning to Run

22 Jun

For us “newer” guys on the block, the run command is an old tool that has been around a long time.

However, it has the teeth to do neat and quick functions.

You can access the control panel through the run command by using the word

control and then adding other words as well such as:

control admintools

control color

control desktop

To access wizards you will use two components:

an abbreviation and the letters “wiz” and “.cpl” for control panel; i.e.

Accessibility Controls                       access.cpl

Add Hardware Wizard                       hdwwiz.cpl

Add/Remove Programs                   appwiz.cpl

Date and Time Properties                timedate.cpl

Display Properties                              desk.cpl

You may also quickly access you application (must be installed), like

Adobe Acrobat                           acrobat

Adobe Photoshop                      photoshop

Basic Media Player                    mplay32

Windows Media Player            dvdplay

Calculator                                     calc

Chrome                                          chrome

Firefox                                            firefox

Internet Explorer                      iexplore

Access                                            msaccess

Infopath                                        infopath

Publisher                                      mspub

Excel                                               excel

Outlook                                         outlook

Word                                              winword

Power Point                                powerpnt

Notepad                                       notepad

Skype                                          “C:\Program Files\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe” (with quotes)

Likewise you can go directly to your drives and folders, if you know the path:

C: Drive                                                 c://Auto (only on my drive)

And then for your experts, the run commands can take you to your services and  utilities:

Check Disk Utility                              chkdsk

Character Map                                    charmap

Disk Cleanup Utility                        cleanmgr

Disk Defragment                                dfrg.msc

Clipboard Viewer                              clipbrd

Component Services                       dcomcnfg

Computer Management                  compmgmt.msc

Compare Files                                     comp

DDE Shares                                          ddeshare

Device Manager                                 devmgmt.msc

Disk Partition Manager                  diskmgmt.msc
